Taiwanese company AU Optronics claims they have produced the world’s
first Quad HD AMOLED display to be shown at the China Electronic
Information Expo (CITE 2014) this week. According to AU Optronics, the
new screen is 5.7-inches in size running at 2560 x 1440 resolution which
produces 513 ppi. For comparison, the Oppo Find 7a will come with a 5.5-inch 538 ppi Quad HD screen and the Vivo Xplay 3S is currently selling with a 6-inch display running at 490 ppi. However, both of those units utilize LCD technology.
In addition to the 5.7-inch screen, AU Optronics says they also have a
6-inch AMOLED panel running Quad HD. Other panels the company says they
have developed include a 1.6-inch AMOLED display intended for wearable
devices as well as a 5-inch, 720p AMOLED display that is only .57mm
thick, one of the thinnest available. AU Optronics is working a variety
of other display panels in various sizes at more common resolutions like
1920 x 1200 to go with the 4K LCD TV panels they produce.
According to sources, AU Optronics supplies panels to a variety of
customers, including Samsung, so it is not clear where we may see these
new panels show up. No doubt Samsung’s own display division is working
on similar technology as it has been rumored to be present in a variety
of devices, possibly including the Galaxy Note 4. With more companies
like AU Optronics hitting the 500 ppi mark for Quad HD screens, it seems
that will soon be the new benchmark for mobile devices.
